Education

I have a Bachelor of Arts from the Evergreen State College and an Associate of Sciences from Seattle Central College. Throughout college I maintained a 3.9 or higher GPA as well as a spot on both the Dean's and President's Lists. I also belong to the International Honors Society.

Experience

I’m a Communications major with over five years of experience in helping students succeed in English and Language Arts. The thing that I love most about teaching is seeing my students observe their own progress and realize that they are bright, capable learners on the path to success! I am passionate about education, and have professional experience in a variety of roles as an educator. Some of these roles have included teaching, designing workshop curricula, private tutoring, and classroom aide work. My earliest experience with helping others learn was as a teenager, when I volunteered with an afterschool program to help younger students build literacy skills. More recently, I helped to develop curriculum and facilitate essay writing workshops with undergrad students at a local college. As a tutor, I currently work primarily with high school, undergrad, and graduate students, but I have enjoyed working with younger students in the past. Previous clients have appreciated my patience, persistence, and sense of humor. Although I am comfortable teaching a variety of subjects, I especially enjoy helping students with writing. I firmly believe that every student has the potential to be a strong writer, and that finding your particular writing voice is key. In the past, I have helped students with essay writing (including thesis development, structure, composition, and thought organization) as well as creative writing, research methods, and basic writing skills such as grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. I have taught writing one-on-one and in groups of ten or more. I have also led writing workshops and presented my own writing at conferences. I believe that learning is a process rather than an endpoint, and this informs my approach to education and working with students. Rather than encouraging the simple memorization of information, I help my students build vital critical thinking and problem solving skills. This is especially useful for students who are preparing to sit big placement exams, such as the SAT and ACT, in which the ability to determine what kind of problem solving strategy to apply is almost as important as understanding the information itself.

Hobbies

When I'm not working as an educator I can be found reading, writing, and spending time with my partner and our dog. I volunteer on the screening committee of a local film festival and have been known to try my hand at cooking, although I can safely say that I am a much better teacher than I am a cook.
