Experience

26 years teaching experience as a substitute teacher and homeschool parent, background in accounting. I want to tutor so that students of all ages know they are not stupid. The way the subject is being presented just doesn't speak to the student's learning style. Any subject can be learned, albeit some taking a little longer for some than others. I brought my 11th grader's Algebra up one full letter grade after only one Algebra lesson. Paul went on to earn an A in Algebra, pass his EOC (end of course exam) AND was the only student in his class to score a 100 on his final! Am I good at Algebra? Not the way it is currently being taught, but I know how to teach and I have excellent out-of-print resources. I like to work with parents to help their child achieve an education, and am very much against "teaching to the test." Students need to learn proficiency in a subject, which is not the same as knowing how to take a test. I have great ESL resources, via my minor in ESOL. I see too many students trying to depend only on supplemental sources to increase vocabulary and situational understanding. One-on-one question/answer is invaluable for full fluency as quickly as possible. Conversational English alone is not enough. Reading and writing skills are necessary, too. English speaking cultures are founded in the written word. Most English teachers have no knowledge of phonics, which are critical to comprehensive fluency of the language. Graduating GPA. Dec 2015: 3.83 on a 4-point grade scale Member of American Association of Educators, National Indian Education Association, Washington Indian Education Association, and the American Bar Association. Available for proctoring, approved to administer the ITBS and Stanford tests. These rates differ from my tutoring rates. Currently available on Sundays only by special request, due to two sons being enrolled in hockey lessons.
