Experience

I've worked for the last 6 years in various forms of childcare, including a math and science oriented Summer Camp for 7th-12th grade, and as a para-educator at Kent Elementary, doing small group and one-on-one math and reading skill intervention. One of the most crucial things I believe is necessary to bring to my work is a deep and honest recognition that every child deserves to feel heard, and to feel significant. Not only that, but each child has his or her own unique way of communicating, and of feeling heard. Without a way to communicate, whether with peers or with teachers or parents, a child cannot receive an equal opportunity to have his or her voice heard. In order to prepare each student for his or her future, I believe it is essential that each student’s needs be understood, communicated, and accommodated for, so that each student can receive an equal opportunity to realize what they are capable of. Tutoring is a wonderful option for making sure these extra steps are taken. I graduated Cum Laude with Honors in the Religion Department, and was awarded the Douglas R. Edwards award for academic excellence in May of 2014. I also received the Lora Bryning Scholarship in 203, and the Herman Myhrman Award in 2012 for academic achievement. I scored in the 95th percentile on the SAT and took a range of classes in college outside of my major, including Statistics, Geology and a number of intensive English Language courses. I also took a number of years of Spanish, and can speak at a somewhat low-conversational level. I am self-driven about my passion for childcare and working in education, and in any position I work in, I am able to exercise my ability to sustain an emotionally positive and encouraging environment with students. I’m enthusiastic and creative with children, and love doing hands-on projects with kids to help them understand the subjects they’re working with. I’m reliable and will-ing to work on my own, but also really enjoy working in group settings as part of what I under-stand as a necessary collaborate process that must continue on a variety of levels in any educational setting.

Hobbies

I love reading and writing, and I sing and write music on the guitar and piano. I also enjoy hiking, biking and running, and anything outdoors. I love making people laugh when I'm not trying to be serious, although even in my work, I strive to be not-too-serious! I believe it's essential not to let things stress one out too much or they become so daunting that they can feel unachievable. I have seen this happen countless times with kids, in subjects they fall behind in. The best way to learn is to make it fun and not too stressful, and to emphasize that if you can learn to enjoy something, you will want to get better at it, and you will!
