For someone like myself that speaks in monotone, being able to learn the tonal language Chinese well enough to do fieldwork in China and complete my PhD means that I do not give up. At the same time, I can be lighthearted, just as I brought laughs to juvenile hall inmates in East LA when I would visit on Sundays. Much of my work, including my PhD work has revolved around studying how to address environmental problems, and in turn I like to enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy soccer, ultimate frisbee, golf, and just getting outside when it is not raining. I also enjoy learning new programming languages.
